She is a proud first-generation student that has a documented learning disability that she deals with on a daily basis. These identities are part of the core of Aaliyah’s passion to make change on campus. The topic of DEI is very special to Aaliyah, not only because of all of the identities that she holds, but because she has a passion for being a voice for the unheard and underrepresented. Since 2022, she has been deeply involved on campus as a Resident Assistant primarily, which has provided her with firsthand experience in supporting the diverse student body of UMass Dartmouth. She understands how crucial it is to be an active listener and provide meaningful support to those that need it. She has also seen the impact that the absence of inclusivity can have on our community. In her opinion, DEI on this campus should look like a community where everyone feels valued, whether that’s in the SGA, residence halls, or classrooms. Aaliyah has many plans for the year within the DEI Committee, including advocating for increased accessibility campus-wide, conducting regular DEI surveys within the student body, as well as creating peer support groups for marginalized students to connect in. Her main goal for the year is to make sure that every student’s voice has a platform, and that we continue to build a campus community where everyone feels valued, supported, and included!
